It's a god damn cello band. "Best bet for stardom." - USA Today. Rasputina has enjoyed the kind of succes that most seasoned bands don't see until well into their careers with a cult-like fanbase both inside and outside the music industry with fans similar to those who follow Dead Can Dance, Kate Bush and Cocteau Twins. Tours with Bob Mould and Morphine are just the beginning.
— What's New Linda?
Simply put, New York City's Rasputina is one of the freshest groups to come along in some time. Imagine three women playing cellos, clad in 18th century corsets and underpinnings, and you have but a small part of the image of this unique band. Singer/songwriter Melora, who played with Nirvana on their final European tour, along with bandmates Agnieszka and Julia, has filled this debut album Thanks for the Ether (1996), with a whirlwind of strings that truly set the band apart. This track [Transylvanian Concubine] was taken from Rasputina's 1997 EP entitled Transylvanian Regurgitations and was mixed by Sean Beavan and Marilyn Manson, whom the band befriended during a tour they did together. The track also features Manson on keyboards as well as MM bandmember Twiggy Ramirez on guitar.
— The Black Bible
'How We Quit The Forest' delivers twisted lyrical witticisms, melodic waves and driving beats all firmly tied with the strappy lattices of a corset.

The members of Rasputina met as students at a now defunct nanny-school on Lower Broadway in Manhattan quite some time ago. Where did the name come from ? Well, they thought of it, of course. Where do their thoughts come from ? Only God knows this. Melora comes from Kansas as a young and savvy Mother Goose. She writes the songs in longhand, in pencil, on staff paper; the others learn the songs as she sings them. Her lyrical inspiration is often literary or historical. Julia is from Canada and she is like an Evil Queen. Agnieszka is from Poland and she likens herself to the Birthday Cake. Each one has played cello since childhood, making their combined years of musical experience total over 60 years!
